President’s Message “Looking Toward the Future”

I thought the Fall Conference was a success. I was especially thrilled that 41graduate students were in the morning session Navigating the Profession. During this session, which was designed for graduate students and new professionals, I brought up my desire to start a mentor program. I think everyone in the room signed on for the possibility of a mentor. However, as I canvassed the professionals at the conference, only a handful signed up to be a mentor. One comment I often heard was “I’m retired”, to which I would answer “who better?” If you are interested in being a mentor, please e-mail me. This is a project I will not complete during my term in office, but it is one I want to see followed through to completion. One of the conference attendees expressed a con- cern on the evaluation with the lack of sessions. The fall conference has always had a limited format with only two, three-hour sessions (and occasionally one six-hour session). OCA’s “big” conference has always been the Mid-Winter Conference.
